House of Alegría’s four pillars of work:

  • Through the HOUSE OF ALEGRIA’S ARTIST RESIDENCY, we offer a one year intentional incubation period for the artist/culture worker to rest, play, create, or reflect. Our end goal is not a final project or performance, rather our end goal is to have the artist/culture worker leave feeling rested, supported, and their imagination tended to. We believe in the power of imagination and the importance for our community to be able to exercise that. Our imagination is the biggest force towards liberation.

Why this format? We believe in nourishing and supporting our emerging artists and culture workers. This means we center their livelihood, their wellness, their humanity before their artistry. We believe in the powerful and critical role artists and culture workers have in imagining and creating better worlds for our communities. And, we also believe in the sustainability, rest, and survival of our artists and culture workers. We value the artist and not just the art and culture. We value the artist not because of what they can produce but because they are part of our larger community (our larger ecosystem). Period! We care for them just because.

  • A publishing press supporting writers in their first book. By and for us. With the support of our in house mentors, designers, coaches, and artists we offer all the necessary tools and resources for the writer to feel equipped and empowered to publish their first book. Together , in a collaborative partnership, we publish the writers first book. We handle design, layout, shipping, packaging, printing, and we cover the cost. We provide a stipend for the author to use towards their book project & , co-create a marketing strategy, support in outreach and performance opportunities to garner book support and wider audience.

  • We believe in sharing out knowledge and co-building an ecosystem for all of us to thrive in. We offer public creative workshops, curate panels between culture workers, and create safe performance spaces for artists to share their current work.

  • As our larger social justice spaces move in the direction of bringing in a cultural arm into their policy campaigns or overall work, we offer advice and guidance in how to organically and thoughtfully bring in cultural workers. We offer models of how to ethically partner with artists. We also consult with national cultural institutions and foundations around equity initiatives for migrant (undocumented) artist.
